Coffee growing has been an important part of Indonesian commerce and culture since it was first introduced by the Dutch in the early 18th century. The rich volcanic soil and naturally temperate climate combine to create the perfect environment for these plants to grow. The Giling Baseh (wet hulled) process gives this coffee its distinctive earthy character and unique translucent blue-green color. The Ketiara Cooperative has over 890 grower-members and is the only cooperative run by women in this important coffee growing region.
